You’ll rarely hear me say, “I’m grateful for…” but you’ll often hear me say, “I’m glad.” And no, it’s not just a language quirk—it’s intentional.
Gratitude gets talked about a lot in self-development spaces. Journals, prompts, mindset shifts—all pushing the idea that if you just focus on what you’re grateful for, you’ll feel better. And sure, gratitude has its place. But for me, it can feel heavy. Like a duty. Like I should be grateful, even when I don’t feel it.
Gladness, though? That feels different.
Gladness is light. It’s simple. It’s the warmth in my chest when my dogs do something ridiculous and make me laugh. It’s the deep contentment I feel when I finish my coffee quietly, and alone in the quiet morning. It’s not a practice—it just is.
Gratitude sometimes feels like looking for the silver lining, even when things are hard. But gladness? It lets me acknowledge what’s good without forcing a lesson out of it. I don’t have to reflect deeply on why I should appreciate something—I just get to enjoy it.
So I do my glads, not my gratitudes. Because “I’m glad” feels lighter, freer, and more mine.
And honestly? That’s something I am grateful for. 😉
There are far too many chores in this world, don’t make gratitude one of them
